Hoping for a child?

Having children is a natural part of life. It can seem unbelievable that almost one out of every five couples has trouble having children. Unfortunately it is true, and there are tens of thousands of couples in Finland who are finding it difficult to conceive.

Fertility problems seem to be steadily increasing in society. Due to modern life, there is a general social trend to postpone having children more and more. Age is one of the most significant factors causing infertility. Women’s fertility begins to decline from the age of 30 onwards and falls more sharply after 37. We now know that the quality of sperm also declines over the years. However, the fall in women and men’s fertility depends very much on the individual. Some of the causes of infertility, such as smoking and being considerably over or underweight, are not beyond a person’s own control.

Fertility is an extremely personal and often sensitive problem that may affect a couple’s relationship and daily life. If you and your partner have been trying to conceive for over a year without success, we recommend you contact a doctor and find out why (read more about the first visit here). There are several possible reasons for infertility, which may equally originate in the man or the woman, or there may be more reasons than one. The causes of women’s infertility include, for example, ovulation disorders, blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis or problems relating to the womb. Men’s infertility may be caused by congenital gene mutations, chromosomal abnormalities or genital pathologies, but many causes are unresolved and require further examination. In approximately 15 % of cases, a definite cause cannot be found.

Ovumia fertility clinic offers all methods and technologies of fertility treatment with excellent results. Approximately 80 % of our couples achieve their long-awaited child with the right treatments. The most common treatment methods are:

  • Intrauterine insemination (IUI) – washed sperm is injected at the appropriate time into the uterus using a very thin catheter
  • In vitro fertilisation (IVF) –a woman’s egg supply is boosted with ovarian stimulation medication, the eggs are collected and then fertilised with sperm in a test-tube
  • Intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) – in cases of difficult male infertility, a single sperm is injected with a thin catheter directly into an egg
  • TESA – if no sperm is found in a man’s semen sample, sperm can be collected from the testicles and then injected into a woman’s egg
  • Special embryo cultivation in laboratory conditions
  • Freezing and storing of embryos
  • Treatments using donor gametes, eggs and embryos
  • Freezing and storing sperm and eggs for later use
  • Pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD) helps couples who are at risk of having a child with a serious hereditary disorder.
  • Pre-implantation genetic screening (PGS) is especially helpful for patients who have had recurrent miscarriages, several unsuccessful fertility treatments or who are over 35 years old. PGS helps us to avoid futile embryo transfers and, at best, achieves pregnancy in 70% of cycles.

Every child born is a miracle. Ovumia’s experienced and multi-professional team has brought about pregnancies resulting in more than 15 000 babies being born. Ovumia also has an ISO certificate. We always do our best!
